India and Pakistan are up against each other in an intense Women's World Cup match in Colombo. Harmanpreet Kaur and co. batted first and scored 247, and in reply, Pakistan have so far struggled to find momentum in their run-chase.
Pakistan left frustrated with change in umpire's decision
However, a big controversy erupted during the final ball of the fourth over. Kranti Goud was the bowler, and she managed to hit the pad of Muneeba Ali as the batter failed to defend. The ball deflected towards the off side as the Indian players appealed but it was turned down by the umpire. Meanwhile, Deepti Sharma fired a direct hit at the batter's end, and Muneeba initially had her bat down in time. However, she then lifted it casually and it created all the problem.
India then appealed for run-out and Muneeba initially was given not out. However, the umpire re-checked it and gave it as out which surprised Pakistan. According to the newly amended law, the batter should not be given out if the bat bounces off the ground while diving to complete a run. However, in this case, Muneeba Ali was not going for a run, and thus her act of lifting the bat went against her. The decision did not go well with the Pakistan camp and the captain Fatima Sana was seen arguing with the umpire as Muneeba Ali initially refused to walk off the field.
MCC Laws on run-out in cricket
30.1 When out of his/her ground
30.1.1 A batter shall be considered to be out of his/her ground unless some part of his/her person or bat is grounded behind the popping crease at that end.
30.1.2 However, a batter shall not be considered to be out of his/her ground if, in running or diving towards his/her ground and beyond, and having grounded some part of his/her person or bat beyond the popping crease, there is subsequent loss of contact between the ground and any part of his/her person or bat, or between the bat and person.
Now, because Muneeba wasn't running or diving, she was considered to be out of her ground and was given out in accordance with the laws.
The decision of OUT was final, and Muneeba Ali eventually walked off the field as Indian captain, Harmanpreet Kaur also had an animated chat with the umpire. Overall, it turned out to be quite an intense moment with confusion all around, and with early wickets for India, Pakistan now have an uphill task of chasing the target of 248.
