Babar Azam once again became a prime fodder for internet memes after the legendary Pakistani batter was dismissed for a sluggish half-century in the opening match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand. Chasing a stiff 321-run target, Babar washed up 81 deliveries to reach his half-century, and scored just 64 from 90 balls before making his way back to the pavilion.

A legion of cricket fans trolled Babar Azam for his “selfish” knock, with several fans claiming that the opening batter took his time to score his own runs just to regain the number one ODI ranking he lost to Indian opener Shubman Gill earlier in the day.

Fans roast Babar Azam for sluggish 64

On the day Babar Azam lost his number one ODI ranking to Shubman Gill, the Pakistani opener recorded his 35th half-century in the format. However, the 30-year-old took 81 deliveries to reach the landmark figure, and ended up scoring 64 runs from 90 balls to maintain a sluggish strike rate of just 71.11.

Moreover, Babar Azam recorded his slow half-century at a time when Pakistan required 321 runs for a win against New Zealand in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy curtain-raiser.

As one can expect, Babar’s latest knock opened floodgates to a legion of internet memes, with several fans blaming his lack of form for ruining Pakistan cricket. Moreover, some fans even claimed that Babar put his own personal ranking above national interest by scoring a slow half-century.

New Zealand batted first and made 320-5 from 50 overs with centuries from opening batter Will Young and wicketkeeper Tom Latham. Glenn Phillips also bludgeoned 61 from just 39 balls during the slog overs.

In response, Pakistan crashed to 200-7 around the 40-over mark of the run-chase, with Babar Azam making 64 of those runs from 90 balls.
