The much anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 got underway today in Karachi. Host Pakistan and New Zealand have come up against each other in the tournament’s opener and kicked off the proceedings.
Without losing much time we have the first centurion of the tournament today itself as New Zealand’s Will Young scored a tremendous ton while bailing out the kiwis after some early trouble. The right-handed opener was coming into this tournament on the back of a streak of low scores and sparked many questions regarding his selection.
However, Young successfully silenced his critics, scoring a century in the first match itself and become only the fourth kiwi batter to score a hundred in Champions Trophy. He has now joined the elite list of players who hit the first century of every Champions Trophy edition, and notably only the second New Zealander to do so.

Young's Hundred Steers NZ To Formidable Total
Earlier, Pakistan had a good start with the ball as they reduced New Zealand to 48/2 at the end of the powerplay after choosing to bowl first. They further went on to remove Daryl Mitchell cheaply after which the duo of Will Young and Tom Latham came together to rebuild the innings.
The pair added 118 runs for the fourth wicket, putting New Zealand set for a big total. Young was dismissed shortly after his century, but Latham continued at the other end and completed his century as well.
Glenn Phillips also joined the party and launched a late surge to finish the innings on a high. He scored a brisk 61 off 39 balls as New Zealand posted an above-par 320-run total in 50 overs.
