Indian captain Rohit Sharma has backed the decision of the appointment of Shubman Gill as national vice-captain ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. A day prior to India’s tournament opener against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium, Sharma also hailed Gill’s formidable record in ODI cricket.

Both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings for Team India during the recently-concluded home series against England. The two cricketers will also helm India’s batting line-up at the top of the order in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Rohit Sharma hails opening partner Shubman Gill

During a pre-match press conference, Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised his opening partner and deputy Shubman Gill for his formidable track record in ODI cricket. He explained that Gill’s proficiency is the reason why he was appointed as team vice-captain. Rohit Sharma said:

“Gill is a classy player, numbers are crazy - There is a reason why he has been moved as the vice-captain.”

Compatible to Rohit Sharma’s claims, Shubman Gill holds a prolific batting average of 60.16 in ODI cricket. The 25-year-old has racked up 2,587 runs in just his first 50 ODI innings, and has plundered seven hundreds and 15 half-centuries in the format.

Shubman Gill also won the ‘Player of the Series’ award during India’s 3-0 win over England at home earlier this month, where he listed two half-centuries and a match-winning ton, all in succession.

Team India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Gill, will now face Bangladesh in their opening Group A match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The match will be hosted by the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on February 20.
