In a significant development from the Indian camp, Rishabh Pant will not take up wicketkeeping duties on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test between India and England at Lord’s, London.

The BCCI has confirmed that Pant is still recovering from a blow to his left index finger, and the medical team is closely monitoring his condition. Dhruv Jurel will continue behind the stumps for the second day.

The 27-year-old wicket-keeper batter suffered the injury during the afternoon session of the first day while attempting to stop a wide delivery from Jasprit Bumrah in the 34th over. He dived to his left but the ball struck him directly on the fingertips.

Though he managed to prevent the boundary with a partial stop, he was clearly in discomfort and required on-field treatment for several minutes. He briefly continued but eventually walked off during the 35th over, visibly in pain.

Dhruv Jurel, who had been serving as a substitute fielder, quickly suited up and took over wicketkeeping duties for the remainder of the day. The Rajasthan Royals gloveman was later seen receiving instructions from the team support staff and will continue to keep wickets on Day 2.

Can Dhruv Jurel Bat In Place Of Rishabh Pant

However, Jurel will not be allowed to bat in place of Pant. Under the current Laws of Cricket, only concussion or COVID-19 substitutes can bat or bowl as replacements. While wicketkeeping substitutions are permitted under genuine medical circumstances, with the umpires’ approval, the replacement is restricted to fielding duties only.

Talking about the match, On the Day 1 , England opted to bat first after winning the toss. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put up a 44-run stand before Nitish Kumar Reddy, bowling a rare spell, removed both batsmen in the same over to give India a double breakthrough.

Joe Root and Ollie Pope then steadied the innings, adding over 50 runs for the third wicket and pushing England past the 100-run mark. Later, Root and Ben Stokes added 79 runs for the fifth wicket to help hosts finish at 251/4 at stumps.
