Sri Lanka comprehensively routed arch-rivals Bangladesh in match number five of the 2025 Asia Cup to bag the two points on offer. Opening batter Pathum Nissanka belted a commanding half-century to headline Sri Lanka’s run-chase after Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera’s sublime new-ball blitz.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the fifth match of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as it panned out at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, September 13.

Tight Thushara, Chameera Spells Restrict BAN To 139

Sri Lankan pacemen Nuwan Thushara (1-17) and Dushmantha Chameera (1-17) both struck with the new ball, removing Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon respectively for ducks in their opener overs of the match. Towhid Hridoy at number four failed to lead his team’s recovery as the cricketer was run out for just eight by Kamil Mishara as Bangladesh slipped to 11-3 in 4.3 overs.

Bangladesh’s fortunes turned for the worst, losing well-set captain Litton Das (28 off 26) and Mahedi Hasan (9 off 7) both to Wanindu Hasaranga (2-25) to reach a sluggish 53-5 around the halfway stage of the innings. Fortunately for Bangladesh, Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain shared a courageous 86-run partnership off 61 balls to steer their team to a competitive 139-5 from 20 overs. While Jaker crafted 41* off 34 balls with two boundaries, Shamim top-scored with 42* from as many deliveries.

Pathum Nissanka Headlines Sri Lanka’s Easy Chase

Chasing 138, Sri Lanka lost opener Kusal Mendis for just three to Bangladesh paceman Mustafizur Rahman in the second over of the innings. Fellow opener Pathum Nissanka counterattacked Bangladesh bowlers by crafting a 95-run partnership for the second wicket with Kamil Mishara. While Nissanka belted 50 runs off just 34 balls with six boundaries and a six, Kamil remained unbeaten in his defiance, cracking a speedy 32-ball 46*.

Mahedi Hasan struck back for Bangladesh with two quick wickets, including that of Nissanka before Tanzim Hasan Sakib halted Dasun Shanaka for just a single. However, Kamil Mishara notched up the winning runs for Sri Lanka alongside captain Charith Asalanka (10* off 4) with six wickets and 32 balls to spare.
