Sydney Sixers met Perth Scorchers in the Challenger match of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 on December 11, in Sydney, to determine Hobart Hurricanes' opponent in the final. The Sixers had finished 2nd in the points table after a 13-point season, while the Scorchers finished with 12, at number 3 and had to get rid of the Melbourne Stars in the Knockouts on their way to this game.

As the Sixers were asked to chase a record total in WBBL knockouts on the night, here's how the match unfolded.

Mooney and Mack set Scorchers for a big first innings total

Upon being asked to bat first after losing the toss, the Aussie international player and star batter Beth Mooney took matters into her own hands, alongside her opening partner Katie Mack and added 66 runs in 7.2 overs for their opening stand. Mack scored 40(30), with six fours and a six, before they lost their first wicket, while Mooney played the second fiddle.

Despite Mooney's presence, the Perth-based team kept losing wickets on the other end at regular intervals, thanks to Maitlan Brown and Amelia Kerr's 2-fers and Ashleigh Gardner's 3/25 (4). The opener batted till the 19th over and accumulated 76(44), with 11 fours and a six to her name, to set her team for a 183/8 total to reach the final.

Star openers provide a steady start to the Sixers' chase

With a big total to chase, the star opening pair of the England batter Sophia Dunkley and Aussie star Ellyse Perry added 58 runs in 7.3 overs before losing the first wicket. Perry scored 29(22) with five fours before she was dismissed. On the other hand, Dunkley batted till the halfway stage and scored 41(30), with seven fours.

Alana King's spin web traps Sixers' dangerous batters

Having dismissed Perry in the 8th over, Alana King was the star of the night for Scorchers with the ball, scalping the explosive Ash Gardner, who had started attacking in the second half of the chase, but fell for 26(21). She also got rid of Maitlan Brown, who scored 14(9) in her cameo, scoring three boundaries.

Days after becoming one of the most expensive players at the Women's Premier League auction, Amelia Kerr tried to bail the team out from the precariou situation and batted till the final over, scoring 42(29), with six fours, but with 19 needed in 5 balls, she had to go out of her way to attack and eventually got out to a leading edge off Lilly Mills and Scorchers won by 11 runs.

Up next, Perth Scorchers will face Hobart Hurricanes on December 13, in Hobart, and try to stop them from winning their first WBBL title.
