Belligerent Australian opener David Warner initially made headlines for his fiery temperament, engaging in on-field altercations and sledging. However, his public persona underwent a significant transformation following the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal that led to his year-long ban.

Regardless, before becoming ‘the Reverend’, Warner’s ‘problem child’ persona often led him to numerous on-field confrontations and controversies with rival contingents. One such ugly incident occurred during Australia’s infamous 2018 tour of South Africa, when the dynamic opener verbally attacked hosts wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock in the stairwell.

When David Warner verbally attacked Quinton

A Steve Smith-led Australian team toured South Africa in March 2018 for a four-match Test series. After three hard-fought days of the opening Test at Durban, hosts South Africa found themselves chasing a stiff target of 417.

After crumbling their way to 136-5, Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock made his way to the crease to join well-set opener Aiden Markram. The two cricketers signaled South Africa’s fighting recovery through their rebellious 147-run stand, during which the duo encountered a rampaging Australian pace attack and much verbal enticements from David Warner.

When the players from both camps were making their way back to the dressing rooms for Tea, Warner launched an all-out verbal assault on Quinton in the stairwell, where he was even shepherded back into the Australian rooms by his teammates at one point. Apparently, as per the Australian opener, the Proteas stumper had fired him up by making disparaging remarks about his wife Candice.
