South Africa bagged one of the most unwanted Test match records following an embarrassing outing after opting to bat first in the New Year's Test against India in Cape Town on Wednesday (January 3).

The Proteas fell in the very hole they had dug for the Indian batters with another lively green surface and got bundled out for a horrific 55 all out in a disastrous first session on Day 1 at Newlands.

The hosts succumbed to the Indian pacers' fantastic usage of a seaming deck and produced the third-lowest first-innings score in Cape Town in the history of Test match cricket.

Only twice before the Proteas' unforgettable collapse did a team suffer greater shame at the crease in the first half of a Test played at the scenic venue.

SA Produce Third Lowest First-Innings Score At Newlands

The total of 45 runs from New Zealand in 2013 remains the lowest-ever first-innings total made in Cape Town in the 146-year-old history of the great format while 54 from neighbours Zimbabwe back in 2005 is still its closest second.

On this occasion, however, the tables were turned on the dominant hosts, who won the first Test comprehensively by an innings & 32 runs in Centurion and were firm favourites heading into the New Year's Test.

Indian speedster Mohammed Siraj ran riot amidst the picturesque Table Mountains and produced eye-catching figures of 6 for 15. After putting in the hard yards at the SuperSports Park without much luck, the Hyderabad seamer finally earned just rewards with an unplayable burst.

In a disastrous scorecard, 15 from wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne was the top score for the South African first-innings where young David Bedingham with his 12 was the only other batter to reach double digits.

Apart from Siraj, ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah and young Mukesh Kumar maintained immense pressure on South African batters and finished with two wickets apiece.
