In a significant development, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) nearly witnessed its first-ever time-out incident today during the match between Khulna Tigers and Chittagong Kings at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday (December 31).

The drama unfolded when Khulna Tigers' captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz appealed for the dismissal of Tom O'Connell for the time violation. But in an unexpected twist, he withdrew the appeal, making the Australian player the first player in BPL history to avoid a time-out dismissal.

Historic Time-Out Incident In BPL 2024

The incident occurred in the seventh over of Chittagong's chase. After the dismissal of Haider Ali for a duck on the first ball of the over, O'Connell, took more than two minutes to take his position at the crease.

According to Law 40.1 of the Laws of Cricket, the incoming batter must be ready to face the next delivery within two minutes of the previous dismissal. O'Connell's delay was deemed a breach of this rule. This prompted Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Khulna Tigers'  to approach the on-field umpires with a time-out appeal.

Initially, the umpires raised their fingers to signal that O'Connell had been dismissed for the time violation, and the Australian batter began walking back to the pavilion. However, in a rare display of sportsmanship, Mehedi Miraz reconsidered his appeal and gestured to the umpires to call O'Connell back to the crease. The decision was reversed, and the Australian batter returned to face his next delivery.

Despite the reprieve, his stay at the crease was brief. O'Connell was dismissed for a golden duck, by Mohammad Nawaz

First Time-Out In International Cricket

This incident brought back memories of the ODI World Cup 2023, when Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan made headlines by enforcing the time-out rule against Angelo Mathews. Shakib's decision, which led to Mathews becoming the first-ever batter to be dismissed for a time violation in international cricket.
