India’s rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal punched out a couple of fighting 80-plus scores against Australia in the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The 23-year-old also whacked a cracking 161 in Perth back in November to headline India’s emphatic 295-run victory in the series-opener.
Despite his heroics amidst Team India’s collective batting failure in the ongoing Australian tour, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell just short of the great Sachin Tendulkar for attaining an all-time Indian record.

Sachin Tendulkar still the leader for THIS record
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s fighting twin 80s at the MCG ensured that the youngster finished 2024 with 1,478 runs from 29 innings, the second highest of the year behind English legend Joe Root (1,556 runs). Notably, the charismatic opener hauled 712 of those runs during England’s five-Test tour of India between January and March, doing so at an astronomical batting average of 89.
As it turned out, Yashasvi Jaiswal also became one of India’s leading run-makers in a calendar year through his recent proficiency in Test cricket. The left-handed batting prodigy fell 84 runs behind perennial batting great Sachin Tendulkar for India’s all-time record of accruing most runs in a single year.

Back in 2010, Tendulkar hauled 1,562 runs at a prolific average of 78.10 with seven hundreds and five half-centuries. Virender Sehwag also plundered over 1,400 in a single year a couple of times in his glittering Test career.
Here is a look at five of India’s highest run-makers in a single calendar year:

While Yashasvi Jaiswal fell just short to attain India’s all-time record, the youngster can start anew later this week against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Team India, currently 1-2 down in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test series despite taking an early lead, needs to win the impending SCG duel in a bid to retain the prestigious trophy.
