Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up five Zimbabwe wickets on Day 2 of the series-opening first Test in Sylhet to spark Bangladesh’s spirited fightback. The 27-year-old sent down more than 20 overs in the innings to blow away Zimbabwe’s lower half, as Bangladeshi bowlers limited their first innings deficit against the hosts to 82 runs.

Miraz’s spell marked his 11th five-wicket haul in Tests as he inched closer to completing 200 wickets in the format. Earlier in the match, the cricketer failed to make any impact with the bat, managing just a solitary run as the hosts folded up for just 191 on Day 1.

Zimbabwe resumed their innings at 67-0 on Day 2, finding themselves another 124 runs away from the hosts. Eventually reaching 193-5 around the halfway stage of the day, Zimbabwe lost each of their final five wickets to Bangladeshi off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The cricketer dismissed Zimbabwe’s lone half-centurion and senior man Sean Williams before mopping up the tail to pick up figures of 5-52 in 20.2 overs. With assistance from fast bowlers Nahid Rana (3-74), Hasan Mahmud (1-55) and Khaled Ahmed (1-30), Miraz and co. enveloped Zimbabwe’s first innings for 273 in 80.2 overs.

By stumps on Day 2, Bangladesh batters reached 57-1 from 13 overs, with opening batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy (28* off 42) and number three Mominul Haque (15*) comfortably placed at the crease. The hosts started their second gig with an early setback, in the form of opener Shadman Islam for just four to lanky Zimbabwe paceman Blessing Muzarabani.

With Test evenly poised, Bangladesh needs just another 25 runs to level up with Zimbabwe.
