South Africa rising star, Matthew Breetzke, is on fire! The young batter has been in sensational form since making his One Day International (ODI) debut, and he once again showed his class in the second ODI against Australia on Friday, August 22.
Matthew Breetzke Continues Dream Run with Another Fifty in ODI Cricket
After South Africa won the toss and chose to bat, the innings got off to a shaky start. Aiden Markram was dismissed in just the second over and Ryan Rickelton followed soon after, scoring only eight runs. But Breetzke held his ground.
Calm and confident at the crease, he steadied the innings and soon reached his fourth consecutive score of fifty or more in ODIs, a remarkable feat for any player, let alone someone so new to international cricket.
His latest milestone came in the 20th over when he pushed a delivery from Adam Zampa to the off side for a single. With that, Breetzke brought up his third ODI half-century, his second in a row against Australia, further proving that he belongs at the highest level.
This achievement also places him in a very elite group. Breetzke is now only the second player in ODI history to score fifty or more in each of his first four matches, joining India’s Navjot Singh Sidhu in this rare accomplishment.
Breetzke’s journey so far has been nothing short of extraordinary. He made a stunning debut with 150 runs against New Zealand, followed it up with 83 against Pakistan, then scored 57 in the first ODI against Australia.
Now, in just his fourth match, he has added yet another commanding fifty and is still going strong.
As of the 25th over, Breetzke was unbeaten on 70 alongside Tristan Stubbs, guiding South Africa to a solid 138 for 3.
