Matthew Breetzke has made a dream start to his One Day International (ODI) career. Ever since his debut, the South Africa batter has shown remarkable consistency and once again he delivered an impressive knock against Australia in the first ODI at Cazalys Stadium, Cairns, on August 19.
This was only his third ODI, yet he continued to shine. After Australia decided to bowl first, South Africa lost Ryan Rickelton in the 17th over. Breetzke then joined forces with Aiden Markram to steady the innings. Although Markram departed after scoring 24 runs, Breetzke carried on with confidence and composure.
Matthew Breetzke Script History After First Fifty vs Australia
As the innings progressed, he reached another fifty, and with this milestone, he created history by becoming only the third player in ODI history to score a half-century in each of his first three matches. Before him, only Navjot Singh Sidhu and Max O’Dowd had achieved this rare feat.
Notably, Breetzke’s journey so far has been extraordinary. On debut, he hammered 150 runs off 148 balls against New Zealand. In his second game, he scored 83 runs against Pakistan. Now, in his third match, he added yet another fifty against Australia, proving his consistency at the highest level.
However, his fine innings came to an end in the 40th over when Travis Head dismissed him for 57 off 56 balls. By that time, he had already built a strong 92-run partnership with captain Temba Bavuma, giving South Africa a solid platform.
What makes his start even more special is that he now holds the record for the most runs scored by any player in his first three ODI innings, with a total of 290 runs. He has gone past Nick Knight, who scored 264 runs, and his skipper Temba Bavuma, who had 259 runs in his first three matches.
Meanwhile, South Africa looked to be in a commanding position at 251 for 5 in 44 overs, with Bavuma and Wiaan Mulder still at the crease and ready to push the score further.
