Matt Renshaw makes a statement after Ashes snub [Source: @qldcricket/X.com]
Matt Renshaw has sent a loud message to Australian selectors after being left out of the first Ashes 2025 squad. He hammered a classy century for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia at the WACA on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old opener, who has been in fine form across formats, made a fluent 101 off 198 balls to put Queensland in control at 323/6 by stumps.
Matt Renshaw continues to shine in the Sheffield Shield
After Queensland opted to bat first, Matt Renshaw built a 97-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne (50) for the second wicket.
Matt brought up his hundred shortly after tea, driving confidently and handling short-pitched deliveries with ease.
His wicket finally fell to Cameron Gannon, edging a short ball down the leg side, but by then, he had already made his point.
Notably, Renshaw’s innings came just days after the disappointment of missing selection for the Perth Test, proving that he’s far from done when it comes to his Test ambitions.
Renshaw, who made his ODI debut earlier this year against India, has been on the radar for a Test recall. He started the Sheffield Shield season with a century against Tasmania and also scored a half-century in the recent ODI series.
However, despite backing from Test opener Usman Khawaja, his name was missing from the Ashes squad.
Matt Renshaw reacts to his Ashes fallout
Meanwhile, Matt Renshaw admitted being disappointed after getting ignored for the Ashes 2025. However, he added that a snub is not the end of the world, and his job is to play cricket and enjoy the process.
“It’s one of those things, obviously there’s disappointment straight away (missing the Test squad) but then you realise that it’s not the end of the world and you still get to come and play some cricket. It’s a lot different to the way I handled it eight, nine years ago. (That time) I came out here and was absolutely nowhere for a while, so I just wanted to enjoy myself today," Renshaw told The West Australian.
That being said, Renshaw’s timely ton could reignite hopes of an Ashes call-up if Australia’s top order struggles early in the series.
For now, the message is clear that Matt Renshaw isn’t ready to be forgotten.
