Beau Webster humiliates Travis Head as five-wicket fury leads to Ashes selection drama

Beau Webster has sent a loud and clear message to the Australian selectors that he’s not ready to give up his Test spot without a fight. The Tasmanian all-rounder produced a brilliant five-wicket haul in the ongoing Sheffield Shield clash, including the prized wicket of Travis Head.

Webster’s performance comes at a crucial time. After a strong 12 months in the Test setup, he now finds his place under threat with Marnus Labuschagne returning to form and Cameron Green pushing for a recall.

Green, who missed recent ODIs due to injury, also made his Sheffield Shield return for Western Australia and struck early, dismissing Angus Lovell to remind everyone of his all-round value.

But it was Beau Webster who stole the headlines. Bowling with rhythm and control in South Australia, he picked up 5 for 50 in 13 overs, turning the game in Tasmania’s favour.

More importantly, by removing Travis Head, one of Australia’s established Test heroes, Webster showed he can deliver when it matters most.

His other wickets include Liam Scott, Jake Lehmann, Nathan McAndrew, and Brendan Doggett.

The timing couldn’t have been better, with national selectors watching closely before naming the final XI for the first Ashes Test.

The debate now intensifies over whether Australia should stick with Green’s proven potential or reward Webster’s recent form and balance.

Labuschagne’s likely return to his preferred No. 3 spot makes it even tougher for Webster, as the team’s composition could allow only one specialist all-rounder.

Beau Webster is less hopeful of Ashes comeback

Interestingly, Beau Webster himself seems realistic but hopeful. Speaking after his Sheffield Shield spell, he admitted he could get squeezed out if Cameron Green regains full fitness but made it clear he’s ready to keep fighting.

"If they see me as a pure middle-order batsman, then I'm probably going to get squeezed out. I hope I'm still in the conversation certainly as a batter only. If not, if it's just the make-up of the team. I will plug away back in first-class cricket - there's a lot of Test cricket coming up. I certainly want to be there (Perth)," Webster told media.

The Ashes 2025 between England and Australia will begin on November 21 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
