On the back of a scintillating century from Smriti Mandhana and dominant bowling, India Women defeated Australia Women by 102 runs in the second ODI at Mullanpur Stadium, New Chandigarh, on Wednesday, September 17. With this record-breaking win, India leveled the three-match series 1-1, setting up a thrilling decider on Sunday in Delhi.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the 2nd ODI of the three-match series between India Women and Australia Women, as it panned out at the Mullanpur Stadium in New Chandigarh on Wednesday, September 17.
Mandhana Blistering Ton Propelled India to Competitive 292
Asked to bat first on another fine batting day in New Chandigarh, India made a flying start, putting 64 runs in the powerplay without losing any wicket. Smriti Mandhana did the major damage, while Pratika Rawal failed to convert her start this time and got out after the 70-run opening stand. Harleen Deol then joined in but had a difficult stay and eventually fell to an unfortunate run out.
Mandhana, in sublime touch, kept India’s innings flowing with regular boundaries. Harmanpreet Kaur also departed cheaply after a couple of hits before the halfway mark. Despite India scoring at a good rate, eyeing a 300-plus total, wickets kept tumbling from one end, with only Mandhana holding one end. The left-hander reached her 12th ODI hundred off 77 balls, the second-fastest for India in Women’s ODIs.
Australia were hunting for the big wicket, and Tahlia McGrath delivered by dismissing Mandhana for 117. India then struggled to build partnerships, but vital contributions from Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, and Sneh Rana took them to 292. In the bowling perspective, Darcie Brown claimed three wickets, while Ashleigh Gardner’s tight spell and two breakthroughs helped Australia to restrict India below 300.
India’s Bowlers Run Through Australia in One-Sided Showdown
Chasing 293, Australia stumbled early as India’s new-ball duo Kranti Goud and Renuka Thakur reduced them to 25 for 2 in the first 10 overs. Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney struggled to find rhythm, with Sneh Rana eventually removing Mooney, a stark contrast to her dominant display in the previous game.
Australia’s middle order failed to control the run flow, with India’s bowlers keeping the run rate in check and taking wickets at regular intervals. The required rate kept going up, forcing Australia to make errors as Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland could not convert their slow starts.
Needing 158 from the final 20 overs, Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath tried to steady the chase, but Deepti Sharma struck twice to break the partnership. The momentum was with India and Kranti Goud returned to wreak havoc, causing two quick wickets and a run-out to wrap up Australia for 190, securing a commanding 102-run victory i.e. Australia’s biggest defeat by runs in ODIs.
