If there was ever a day where a batter said, “I am taking matters into my own hands,” it was Wiaan Mulder on Monday morning in Harare. South Africa’s stand-in skipper went on a run-scoring rampage, leaving Zimbabwe’s bowlers in tatters and the cricketing world in awe.

Lunch came early for the Proteas on Day 2 of the second Test, not because they were tired but because they had piled on a mammoth 625/5. The declaration meant Mulder’s whirlwind knock ended on 367 not out, just 33 short of Brian Lara’s iconic 400*. But even without the world record, Mulder walked off having broken a truckload of records.

Let’s take a look at list of records Wiaan Mulder broke with his 367* knock.

Highest Individual Score By A South African in Tests

Hashim Amla’s 311* was the gold standard in South African red-ball histor until Mulder decided to rewrite the script. He tiptoed past Amla’s record with a cover drive for four off Blessing Muzarabani to stamp his authority with style. That one shot took him to 312 and beyond which made him the highest scorer ever in South African Test cricket.

Second Fastest Triple Centurion

Mulder brought up his triple century in just 297 balls, making him the second-fastest in the history of Test cricket to the 300 mark.

Only Virender Sehwag, who got there in 278 balls in Chennai back in 2008, has done it faster. And guess what? Sehwag’s knock was also against South Africa. That’s some full-circle stuff right there.

Highest Score By A South African Captain In Tests

Wiaan Mulder's 367* is now the highest individual score by a South African Test captain, going past the legendary Graeme Smith’s 277 at Edgbaston back in 2003. From filling in as a stand-in skipper to smashing records like a seasoned pro, Mulder made sure his name sits right at the top and it might stay there for a long, long time.

Highest Score By A Batter In An Away Test

Hanif Mohammad’s 337 in the West Indies had stood tall since 1958. That record finally found a challenger in 2025. Mulder’s 367* is now the highest score ever by a visiting batter in Test cricket.

Fifth-Highest Score In Test History

Mulder has entered the list of highest individual scores in Test cricket. He is at the fifth spot behind Brian Lara (400*), Matthew Hayden (380), Brian Lara (375), Mahela Jayawardene (374).

He has leapfrogged legends like Sanath Jayasuriya (340), Len Hutton (364) and Sir Garry Sobers (365).

Most Runs In A Test By A South African Batter

Graeme Smith had held the record with 362 runs in a single Test (277 & 85) at Edgbaston in 2003. But Mulder wasn’t here for second place. With 367* in the second Test, Mulder has the highest Test match aggregate by a South African batter in history.

Youngest Test Captain to Smash A Triple Hundred

As if rewriting South Africa’s record books wasn’t enough, Mulder also shattered a 61-year-old world record.

At 27 years and 138 days, he became the youngest captain in Test history to score a triple century, overtaking Australia’s Bob Simpson, who was 28 years and 171 days when he made 311 against England back in 1964.

A Knock For The Ages

What makes this knock even more special is the fact that he is the stand-in captain. No Temba Bavuma. No Keshav Maharaj. But Mulder didn’t blink. He stepped up, strapped in, and went after it like a man possessed.

It’s not every day you see someone flirt with Brian Lara’s record and rewrite an entire section of South Africa’s cricketing history. Wiaan Mulder didn’t just raise his bat, he raised the bar.
