India’s modern-day batting greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shone with the bat against South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi on Sunday. The duo stitched an amazing 136-run partnership for the second wicket to help India post 349/8 in the first innings after being asked to bat first by toss-winning Proteas skipper Aiden Markram. 

Besides that, Kohli scored his 52nd ODI century, achieving multiple milestones, both in the ODIs and in international cricket, alongside Rohit Sharma joining him with a 57-run knock. Given that, here’s a look at all the records achieved by Rohit and Kohli, be it together or the individual milestones. 

Most 50+ partnerships at home in ODIs 

The veteran pair of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has now moved to the third spot in the list of most 50+ partnerships at home in the One-Day Internationals. They are following the pairs of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara for Sri Lanka (24), and David Boon and Geoff Marsh for Australia (19). 

Most 100+ Partnerships at home in ODIs 

The legendary duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has also entered the list of ‘top five 100+ partnerships at home in ODIs’, being placed at the fifth spot. They have now eight 100+ partnerships at home in ODIs, equaling their compatriot pairs of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar (8), alongside Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar (8). 

Most 100+ partnerships in ODIs 

The Rohit-Kohli pair also registered their 20th 100+ partnership in the ODIs, equalling the Sri Lankan pair of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara. The former legendary Indian pair of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar (26) is at the top of this list in the ODIs. 

Most 50+ scores for India at home in ODIs 

The modern master Virat Kohli has also surpassed the former batting great Sachin Tendulkar in terms of most 50+ scores for India at home in One-Day Internationals. Kohli now has 59 scores of 50+, surpassing Tendulkar’s 58. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has also strengthened his position at the third spot with 37 50+ scores for India at home in the ODIs.

Most 50+ scores at home across formats 

With his amazing 135-run knock, Kohli has also made it to the list of the batters with ‘most 50+ scores at home across formats’. It was Kohli’s 100th 50+ score at home across all formats. He is now at the fourth in this list, following Jacques Kallis (104), Ricky Ponting (106), and Sachin Tendulkar (112). 

Most 50+ scores for India in ODIs 

With their knocks in the Ranchi ODI against South Africa, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have also registered their name in another milestone. Kohli has strengthened his second spot in the list of ‘most 50+ scores for India in ODIs’, following Sachin Tendulkar (147). On the other hand, Rohit has equalled the former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, with his 93rd 50+ score for India in the ODIs. 

Most 50+ scores at home in ODIs 

Virat Kohli has also reached the top spot in the overall list of the ‘most 50+ scores at home in ODIs’, scoring his 59th 50+ score, surpassing his cricketing idol Sachin Tendulkar (58). Jacques Kallis is at the third spot in this list with 46 50+ scores. 

Most ODI sixes for a team 

Indian batting stalwart Rohit Sharma has also achieved a unique feat, becoming the batter with the most ODI sixes for a single team. He has now smashed 352 sixes for India in the ODIs, surpassing former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi who had 349 sixes for Pakistan and the West Indies great Chris Gayle (330). 

Most 50+ scores as an opener in ODIs 

With his 57-run knock, Rohit Sharma also equalled the former Caribbean batting great Chris Gayle in the list of ‘most 50+ scores as an opener in ODIs. He is now just behind Sanath Jayasuriya (94) and Sachin Tendulkar (120). 

Most sixes in ODIs 

Besides becoming the batter with ‘most ODI sixes for a team’, Rohit Sharma also became the batter with the overall ‘most sixes in ODIs’. With his 352nd six, he surpassed Shahid Afridi, who had smashed 351 sixes while playing for ICC XI, Asia, and Pakistan. 

Most 50+ scores across formats 

Virat Kohli also strengthened his position at the second spot with his 227th 50+ score across all formats, just behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 264 50+ scores. Kohli is followed by Ricky Ponting (217) and Kumar Sangakkara (216) in this list. 

Highest second wicket partnerships for India vs SA at home in ODIs

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also registered their names at the fifth spot in the list of the ‘highest second wicket partnerships for India vs SA at home in ODIs’. RoKo’s 136-run stand is now behind the 149-run stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma in Kanpur almost a decade back in 2015. 

Most runs by a batting pair in Home ODIs 

Besides the other milestones, the RoKo pair has also become the pair to score the ‘most runs by a batting pair at home in ODIs’ with 2667 runs. They surpassed the legendary Sri Lankan duo of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. Another Indian pair in this list is Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar with 2310 runs together. 


Most 100s in ODIs

With the remarkable century against South Africa in the ODI series opener, Virat Kohli also strengthened his position at the top in the list of ‘most 100s in ODIs’, followed by the former India legend Sachin Tendulkar (49) and his currently active teammate Rohit Sharma (33). 

Most 100s vs South Africa in ODIs 

Virat Kohli has also become the the batter with the ‘most 100s against South Africa in the ODIs’, with his sixth century against the Proteas. He is followed by India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s David Warner (five each), and Kane Williamson for New Zealand (4). 

Most 100s at home in ODIs

The modern-day batting great Virat Kohli has also increased the number of his centuries at home in ODIs, alongside leading the list of ‘most 100s at home in ODIs’, with 25th ton. Former India great Sachin Tendulkar (20) follows him in this list, with South Africa’s Hashim Amla and India’s Rohit Sharma at third spot with 14 centuries each in home ODIs.

Most 100s at a single venue in ODI in India

Kohli also became the batter to score ‘most 100s at a single venue in ODIs in India’, with his third century in just the fifth innings in Ranchi. He is followed by Sachin Tendulkar with three centuries in seven innings in Vadodara. 

Most sixes by Virat Kohli during an ODI innings when reaching 100 runs 

This 136-run knock played by Kohli also became his second 100+ knock in ODIs with ‘most number of sixes’ with five sixes, following own century innings against Australia in Jaipur in 2013 with seven sixes. 

Most 100s at number three across formats 

Virat Kohli also made his position strong at the third spot in the list of the batters with ‘most 100s at number three across all formats’, with his 45th 100 at this batting position. He is now behind former Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara (55) and former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting (61). 

Most 100s against South Africa across formats 

With his ninth century against SA across formats, Kohli also reached the third spot in the list of the batters with ‘most 100s against South Africa across all formats’. Former Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar is still leading the list with 12 centuries against Proteas. 

Most 100s between India and South Africa in ODIs 

Virat Kohli also joined Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers to top the list of batters with ‘most 100s between India and SA in ODIs’. Sachin Tendulkar (5) and Gary Kirsten (4) are at the second and third spots, respectively.

The Milestone hundreds in international cricket  

Virat Kohli’s 52nd ODI century also happened to be a milestone hundred in the entire history of international cricket. It was the 7000th century in the 148-year-long history of international cricket. Kohli has now joined the legends, Kumar Sangakkara (4000th century) and Ross Taylor (5000th century), Dean Jones (2000th century), Ian Chappell (1000th century), and Steve Waugh (3000th century). 

Most 100s at a specific batting position in a particular format 

With his record-extending century against South Africa in the Ranchi ODI, Kohli also equalled Sachin Tendulkar in the list of batters with ‘most 100s at a specific batting position in a particular format’. He has now 45 centuries at number three in ODIs, equalling Sachin’s 45 centuries as an opener in ODIs. 

Most 100s at home in one format in international cricket 

The 136-run knock also helped Kohli surpass the modern-day England batting great Joe Root in the list of batters with ‘most 100s at home in one format in international cricket’. Kohli has now 25 centuries in India in the ODIs, following Joe Root’s 24 centuries in England in Test cricket. 

Highest individual scores for Virat Kohli vs South Africa in ODIs 

The century in the Ranchi ODI against the Proteas also happened to be the third highest individual score for Virat Kohli against South Africa in ODIs. He surpassed his highest individual score of unbeaten 129 in Centurion in 2018. His top two scores in this list are unbeaten 160 in Cape Town in 2018, and 138 in Chennai in 2015. 

Most 6s by Virat Kohli in an innings in ODIs 

The Ranchi ODI century also recorded the joint-second ‘highest number of sixes by Virat Kohli in an innings in ODIs. With seven sixes in 136-run knock, he equalled the number of sixes he smashed in his knock against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, following eight sixes against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram in 2023.

Highest innings totals for India vs SA in ODIs 

The 349/8 total against South Africa in Ranchi also became India’s second highest innings total against Sri Lanka in the ODIs, following their 401/3 total in Gwalior in 2010, when Sachin Tendulkar smashed the first-ever double century in ODIs. 

Most 6s in an ODI innings for India 

Team India also achieved another milestone with 16 sixes against SA in the first ODI as it happened to be their joint-third highest number of sixes in an ODI innings. The highest number is 19 sixes against Australia in Bengaluru in 2013, when Rohit Sharma scored a double century against the Aussies. 

Most 6s for batter in an ODI innings for India vs South Africa

With seven sixes against SA in Ranchi ODI, Kohli also equalled Ishan Kishan to be on the second spot in the list of ‘most sixes for a batsman in an ODI innings for India against SA’. Former India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan is at the top of this list with his eight sixes in Centurion in 2011. 

Most 6s hit by a team against South Africa in an ODI 

With 16 sixes, India also surpassed England to reach the fourth spot in the list of the teams with ‘most sixes against South Africa in an ODI’. England (19), Australia (18), and Sri Lanka (17) are placed at the first three spots in this list. 

Most runs scored by Virat Kohli in an over in ODIs 

With an amazing 20-run against Prenalan Subrayen of South Africa in the Ranchi ODI, Kohli registered his third moment of ‘most runs scored by him in an over in ODIs’. His 22-run over against Trent Boult in 2016 and 24-run over against Lasith Malinga in Hobart in 2012 are placed at the top two spots of this list.

Most 6s for India vs South Africa in an ODI innings 

The Ranchi ODI became the game for India in this format, when they smashed the ‘highest number of sixes against South Africa in ODIs’. India smashed 16 sixes against the Proteas bowling attack in this game, surpassing their previous best of 12 sixes in Gwalior ODI more than 15 years ago.
