In a performance that will be etched in the memories of cricket fans, Sri Lankan all-rounder, Kamindu Mendis announced his arrival on the international stage with a stellar century on day four of the first Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester.

The 25-year-old, playing in only his fourth Test outing, scored his third hundred, an incredible 113 that not only saved his team from the brink but also placed him in the elite company of some of Asia’s finest cricketers.

ENG vs SL: Mendis’ heroic hundred put him in company with Indian legends

Kamindu Mendis’ hundred was nothing short of remarkable. Walking in at a dismal 95/4 after the fall of captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Mendis found himself in a situation that could easily unravel a less composed player.

But the young Sri Lankan was unperturbed. With the calmness of a veteran, he soaked the pressure, his bat speaking volumes as he steadily rebuilt the innings.

Over the course of 183 balls, Mendis struck 15 fours and a solitary six, showcasing courage that few can muster in such trying circumstances.

What makes this century even more remarkable is that it places Mendis in an elite group of Asian batters who have scored a hundred while batting at number seven or lower on English soil.

This exclusive list includes cricketing legends such as Sandeep Patil, Rishabh Pant, Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Ajit Agarkar, and Ravindra Jadeja. Mendis now becomes only the seventh Asian batter to achieve this feat.

Mendis’ innings was finally brought to an end at 113, but not before he, alongside Dinesh Chandimal ensured that his team set a challenging target for England. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 326, leaving England a target of 205 runs.
