One of India's most dependable openers, Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on a Saturday morning, marking the end of a glittering career that spanned over 13 years.

As soon as the Shikhar Dhawan retirement news broke, tributes started pouring in from the cricketing world, with former players and current stars expressing their admiration and gratitude for the left-handed stalwart.

The cricketing fraternity took to social media to celebrate Shikhar Dhawan's career and wish him well in his future endeavours.

India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who himself was a pillar of India's batting lineup, expressed confidence that Dhawan would continue spreading joy and positivity in whatever path he chooses next.

Gambhir's sentiments were echoed by another legendary opener, Virender Sehwag, who lauded Dhawan's "top performances" ever since he took over the mantle from him as India's opener.


Indian all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, was also quick to congratulate Dhawan on his Instagram story, offering warm wishes for the road ahead. Shreyas Iyer too expressed his admiration for Dhawan and wished him the best.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami also chimed in with his best wishes as he called him an inspiration both on an off the field.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer also joined the chorus, praising underrated Dhawan's consistent performances over the years and called him a 'team man'.

International umpire Richard Kettleborough also paid tribute to Dhawan by calling him one of the most elegant left-handers.

Punjab Kings, the IPL franchise Dhawan represented in his final cricketing days, also paid tribute, celebrating his numerous achievements, the runs he scored, the trophies he lifted, and the unforgettable moments he created on the field.

Dhawan, who debuted for India in 2010, quickly cemented his place in the team, becoming a vital cog in India's white-ball machinery.

Over his illustrious career, Dhawan played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, amassing 2315, 6793, and 1579 runs, respectively.

His tally includes 24 centuries—17 in ODIs and seven in Tests. His last competitive appearance was in April this year for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League.
