West Indies pacemen Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph skitled Australia in just 56.5 overs before Australia’s experienced pace merchants Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins briefly came to the fore in the final session. As many as 14 wickets fell on a bowler friendly Day 1 as Australia’s away series in the Caribbean starts off on a cracking note.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of Day 1, as it panned out at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday, June 25.
Seales, Shamar Joseph Wreck Australian Line-Up
West Indies pace duo of Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph scythed through the Australian line-up by picking up nine wickets between them. Joseph, hero of the Gabba classic between the two sides last year, started off the proceedings with the wickets of Sam Konstas and Cameron Green as the visitors lost two inside the opening hour of the match.
Seales bounced out Josh Inglis for five, before Usman Khawaja scored a timely 47 alongside half-centurion Travis Head to take Australia past the 100-run mark. Shamar struck back for the West Indies with the quick wickets of Khawaja and number six Beau Webster to claim sensational figures of 4-46 from his 16 overs.
Head, who bludgeoned 59 runs from just 78 balls with nine fours, nicked one towards wicketkeeper Shai Hope off Justin Greaves. Jayden Seales bested Alex Carey in one of his return spells before mopping up the Australian tail to snare his third Test five-fer as Australia folded up 180 in 56.5 overs.
Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins Fight Back For Australia
Australian pace thunderbolt Mitchell Starc made full use of the new ball by getting rid of both West Indies openers, Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell. Pat Cummins dismissed number three Keacy Carty with an absolute snorter, while Josh Hazlewood castled night watchman Jomel Warrican in the final moments of the day.
West Indies eventually reached 57-4 from 20 overs by stumps, with unbeaten Brandon King (23*) and captain Roston Chase (1*) batting at the crease.
