Riding on and Shubman Gill's fabulous fifty and Rashid Khan's brilliant all-round performance, Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in the first match of the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Friday. The defending champions opened their account in the IPL 2023 points table with this emphatic win.

After being put into bat, Chennai Super Kings had a poor start to their innings, losing Devon Conway to Mohammad Shami in the third over.

Moeen Ali, who was promoted to number three, struck some glorious boundaries before being dismissed by Rashid Khan for a 17-ball 23. Meanwhile, famed all-rounder Ben Stokes had a forgettable outing, becoming Khan's second victim of the game.

However, Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his onslaught on the Titans' bowlers, setting the stage on fire with a spectacular 92-run knock. The 26-year-old batter from Maharashtra went berserk particularly against GT's pace bowlers, taking them to the cleaners during his 50-ball stay.

His fantastic knock, glittered with four boundaries and nine humongous sixes helped CSK post a healthy 178-run total in 20 overs.

In response, Gujarat Titans had a brisk start, courtesy of a breezy 37-run opening stand between Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill. Saha played his role of a Powerplay basher to perfection, playing a quickfire 25-run cameo before being dismissed by Rajvardhan Hangargekar.

The impact player Sai Sudharsan supported Gill with distinction, as the duo stitched a crucial 53-run stand before the former became Hangargekar's second victim in the tenth over.

Although skipper Hardik Pandya departed cheaply, Gill held the fort for the Titans, amassing a gorgeous 36-ball 63, studded with six fours and three sixes.

After he got out, the game hung in balance until the arrival of Rashid Khan, who played a priceless 10*-run cameo before Rahul Tewatia seized the day for GT with consecutive boundaries in the final over.

Why CSK lost the match?

  • Rashid Khan had a fabulous outing against CSK's left-handers. The Afghan maestro troubled the likes of Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali, dismissing both of them. On the other hand, the CSK spinners- Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner- had an off day, claiming only one wicket for 60 runs collectively.
  • Besides Gaikwad, none of the CSK batters stepped up to the occasion in this game. The most disappointing of the lot was Shivam Dube, who looked rusty for his sloth-paced 18-ball 19. However, MS Dhoni looked more comfortable than Dube in the middle. So, the question arises, should Dhoni have promoted himself? On the contrary, most of the GT batters came up with crucial contributions.
  • CSK's impact player Tushar Deshpande didn't put any impact in the game, as he was hammered for 51 runs in 3.2 overs.
