Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni thinks that the newly-introduced Impact Player is a "luxury". For the unknown, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, teams will have an option to introduce an Impact Player in any of the two innings, replacing someone from their starting XIs.

When asked about that rule at the toss, Dhoni stated its effect will depend on the teams' usage.

He also clarified how the sides could only use an Impact Player till the 14-over mark in either of the innings in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, it will not be the case in IPL 2023.

"It is a luxury to have [on the impact player rule]. A lot will depend on how the teams will use it. In the domestic, you had the 14-over rule and the players had some experience," Dhoni said.

"The influence of the all-rounder has been slightly less after this. Devon (Conway), Moeen, (Ali) Ben Stokes, and (Mitchell) Santner in the XI. All the others will fight for the impact player," he added.

Meanwhile, CSK are on the charge. After being asked to bat first by Gujarat Titans, the Dhoni-led side has smashed 178 runs at the loss of 7 wickets after playing their quota of 20 overs. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a brilliant 92 off 50 deliveries, before falling on a controversial call.

Meanwhile, CSK's beloved Thala returned to vintage best in the last over, tonking one maximum and a boundary to give his fans something to cheer about.
