Young Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage accounted for five of India’s top six batters in their Asia Cup 2023 Super Four bout in Colombo. The 20-year-old finished with figures of 5-40 from 10 overs, thus claiming his maiden five-fer in ODIs.

Wellalage was employed by Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka from the 12th over of the Indian innings, and the youngster made instant impact. The Colombo-born player showed plenty of skill, and even more spin in his hometown, with Virat Kohli’s wicket being the pick of his career-best figures.

During the mid-innings break, the Jaffna Kings star credited his coaches and management for his newfound success, and acknowledged the massive wicket of Kohli that triggered a colossal Indian collapse.

Wellalage says Virat Kohli his dream wicket

Dunith Wellalage dismissed Indian opener Shubman Gill off his first ball. The young cricketer did not stop there and ended up accounting for each of the first four Indian wickets, including that of Virat Kohli as the ‘Men in Blue’ slipped to 90-2 in 14 overs.

During the mid innings break, Wellalage credited his coaches and team management for his rise in international cricket. He also acknowledged his success against Virat Kohli, and described the same as his dream wicket. Wellalage said:

“I want to thank my coaches and management especially my spin bowling coach. I tried to bowl my normal variations and not give runs. My dream wicket was Kohli's wicket. The surface is uneven and it is not easy but we have a good batting line-up, we will give a good fight.”

Dunith Wellalage’s spell of 5-40 ultimately folded up India’s star-studded batting line-up at 213.

The Sri Lankan run-chase commenced a while later following a brief rain-interruption in Colombo.
