Deepti scythes through ENG line-up with five-fer

Indian speedsters Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar accounted for the entirety of England’s top three, with the latter’s direct hit curtailing visiting opener Tammy Beaumont’s threatening stay at the crease.

Number four Nat Sciver-Brunt bludgeoned a near run-a-ball 59, but she kept losing partners at the other end following Beaumont’s untimely runout.

With England’s innings poised at 108-3 in 25 overs, the visitors ended up losing their final seven wickets for just 28 additional runs as they were folded up for 136, courtesy of Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana’s lower-order demolition act.

The two Indian off-spinners shared seven wickets between them, with Deepti registering her career-best figures of 5-7 in less than six overs. England’s dismal batting effort in the backend handed the ‘Women in Blue’ a monumental 292-run first-innings lead.

India loses six, but extend lead to 478 by stumps

Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana unleashed identical top-order cameos in their 61-run partnership in just 77 balls. Jemimah Rodrigues and bowling star Deepti Sharma also slapped rapid 20s from their end before two of Charlie Dean’s four Indian victims of the afternoon.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur defied Dean and Sophie Ecclestone’s spin threat with a calculated 44*, which ensured Team India did not lose another wicket in the final hour of play.

Her unbeaten partnership with Pooja Vastrakar stretched India’s lead to 467, and the two cricketers will resume proceedings on Day 3, batting at 44* and 17*, respectively. Much like the first innings, the ‘Women in Blue’ scored their runs at run rate of nearly 4.50 an over.
