Pant dismissed by Sodhi [Source: JioCinema/Screengrab]
Just when you think Rishabh Pant will score a Test century, the India keeper throws his wicket away and this is exactly what transpired in the first session of Day 2. The Indian keeper was going strong in the middle and raced away to his fifty in no time, but one lapse of concentration costed him his wicket.
Another brilliant cameo ends in disarray
Pant came out to bat when India were in a dire need of someone playing an attacking innings. New Zealand were on top at the end of Day 1 and India were hopeful of a miracle as the hosts could smell a 3-0 whitewash. However, Pant, alongside Shubman Gill forged a crucial partnership and took India out of a precarious situation.
The duo added 96 runs for the fifth wicket and seemingly took the game away from the Kiwi court. Pant slammed his fifty in just 36 deliveries as he embarked on breaching the three-figure mark. However, Ish Sodhi, the New Zealand spinner had some other plans as the leg-break bowler trapped Pant lbw to jolt the Indian side.
The leg-break delivery pitched outside the off and took a sharp turn as Pant stayed on the back-foot and failed to get a bat on it. The ball cops a blow on the pad, but unfortunately for Pant, it was umpire's call and the keeper-batter had to walk back after scoring a brilliant 60 off 59 balls.
India eye big first innings lead with Gill out there
India still have hopes of a big score, especially with Shubman Gill out there. The number 3 batter has played with grit and determination and looks compact as India will hope he can breach the three-figure mark.
The wicket will start to assist the spinners in the fourth innings and the Indian side will hope they get a big first-innings lead to put the pressure on the Kiwi batters in the second innings. With Ravindra Jadeja supporting Gill and still plenty of batters to follow, India have a great chance of posting a commanding total.
