India's premier batter Shubman Gill missed out on a well-deserved century in the third Test of the ongoing three-match series against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Batting at number three, Gill struck a glorious 90-run knock before Ajaz Patel dismissed him at a crucial juncture of the game.
The incident occurred during the 54th over of India's first innings when Gill was trying to add some valuable runs to the total alongside Washington Sundar. New Zealand skipper Tom Latham's decision to continue Ajaz Patel at one end worked wonders for the visitors, with the ace left-arm spinner dismissing Gill with a beautiful delivery.
After starting his over with a dot ball, Ajaz Patel bowled a tossed-up delivery that turned sharply away from Gill after pitching outside the off stump. As the Punjab batter played a forward defensive shot, the ball flew off his outside edge, with Daryl Mitchell taking a sharp low catch in the first slip.
Thus, Gill, who got a lifeline earlier, courtesy of Mark Chapman's fielding blunder, missed out on a well-deserved century, being dismissed for 90 runs.
India Near New Zealand's 1st Innings Total
Despite losing four wickets inside 19 overs, India made a clinical comeback in the Mumbai Test, thanks to a fighting 96-run stand between Gill and Rishabh Pant. However, the latter's dismissal opened the floodgates for India, with the Blackcaps bouncing back with three more wickets in quick succession. Nevertheless, India have gone past New Zealand's first innings total, placed at 239 for eight, with Washington Sundar and R Ashwin batting on 14* and 6*, respectively.
