India Under-19 blanked their UAE counterparts by 10 wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in their final Group A match of the Under-19 Asia Cup 2024. Compensating for their opening defeat to Pakistan, the outcome helped India seal a spot in the semifinals of the tournament.

Indian new ball pacemen Yudhajit Guha and Chetan Sharma made the new ball count by getting rid of UAE top-order batters Aryan Saxena and Yayin Rai inside the first six overs of the match. Left-arm spinner Hardik Raj also snared the key wickets of a well-set Ethan D'Souza (17) and UAE captain Aayan Afzal Khan (5) to claim figures of 2-28 from his 10 overs.

Leg-spinner KP Karthikeya sneaked in a wicket of his own during the 18th over of the innings by trapping UAE opener Akshat Rai plumb in front of stumps for a cautious 26.

UAE middle-order batter Muhammad Rayan top-scored in the innings with a cunning 35 from 48 balls. Shortly after he was knocked over by Ayush Mhatre (1-19) at 107-6, the hosts folded up for just 137 in 44 overs. India’s new ball operator Yudhajit Guha claimed the final two wickets on offer to seal astonishing figures of 3-15, while Chetan Sharma (2-27) cleaned up number eight batter Noorullah Ayobi (9 off 23).

Chasing 138, Indian openers Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi extracted 87 wicketless runs from just the first 10 overs of the innings, with both unbeaten cricketers nearing quickfire half-centuries. Mhatre, in particular, walloped UAE bowler Aryan Saxena for two boundaries and a six off successive deliveries in the final three balls of the tenth over.

Both cricketers brought up their 100-run opening partnership in 12 overs, and reached their respective 50s in the space of just two balls from each other. After notching up a 32-ball fifty, Suryavanshi raged on and smacked two additional sixes to finish the Indian chase at 76* from 46 balls. Mhatra himself closed out at 67* off 51 balls with four boundaries and as many maximums as India Under-19 seared towards a 10-wicket win in just 16.1 overs.

Qualifying for the semifinals of the 2024 Under-19 Asia Cup with the win, the ‘Boys in Blue’ will now likely face Sri Lanka in the knockout clash on December 6.
