Yudhajit Guha and Chetan Sharma delivered early breakthroughs for India Under-19 in their must-win Group A match against UAE at the 2024 Under-19 Asia Cup in Sharjah. Sharing the new ball, the two young Indian speedsters chipped in with a wicket each in their opening spells after UAE captain Aayan Afzal Khan won the toss and opted to bat first.

While Guha knocked over UAE opener Aryan Saxena in the fifth over of the match, his pace mate Sharma removed Yayin Kiran Rai for a first-ball duck as the hosts crashed to 17-2 at one stage of their tottering innings.

Indian pacemen jolt UAE top-order

Indian Under-19 fast bowler Yudhajit Guha cleaned up threatening UAE opener Aryan Saxena for nine with a scorching in-swinger during the fifth over of the match. The following over, fellow right-arm speedster Chetan Sharma trapped newcomer Yayin Rai plumb in front of stumps for a first-ball duck.

Later in the match, left-arm spinner Hardik Raj dismissed Ethan D'Souza for 17 and UAE captain Aayan Afzal Khan for a run-a-ball five. Leg-spinner KP Karthikeya snared the prized-scalp of well-set UAE opener Akshat Rai after the latter reached a cautious 26 until the 18th over of the innings.

The match, a virtual quarterfinal fixture, marks a must-win one for both sides in a bid to qualify for the 2024 Under-19 Asia Cup semifinals. Team India, under the leadership of Mohamed Amaan, lost their opening match of the tournament to arch-rivals Pakistan by 43 runs.

The ‘Boys in Blue’ bounced back with a 211-run routing of Japan Under-19, and another win over UAE at this stage of the competition will help them book a place in the semifinals. In Group B, the Sri Lankan and Bangladesh cricket teams have already qualified for the knockouts.
