It turned out to be an anti-climactic moment for India's Axar Patel, who was denied a hat-trick by skipper Rohit Sharma. In the ongoing Champions Trophy game between India and Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Patel was extremely close to getting a hat-trick and registering himself in an elite list of players.
Bangladesh Lose Their Way Early In The Innings
In the second match of the Champions Trophy 2025, India and Bangladesh came face to face at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for this prestigious encounter. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first on a wicket where Indian skipper Rohit Sharma felt that the batting would be easier in the second half.
Bangladesh themselves chose to bat and were under immense pressure by the end of the second over as they lost their second wicket for two runs on the board. And by the 6.2 overs, they were three down for 26 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz back in the hut as well.
Axar Patel Causes Bangladesh Batters Problems
However, problems didn't end there, as left-arm spinner Axar Patel was looking to damage the opposition's lineup. Axar bowled a dot delivery first up and then got the outside edge of Tanzid Hasan on the very next delivery, which was caught brilliantly by KL Rahul, the wicketkeeper.
Nevertheless, Axar didn't hear anything, and he wasn't confident enough, unlike Rahul, who appealed until the umpire raised his finger, giving Bangladesh another massive shocker with four down for 35.
The next batsman was experienced Mushfiqur Rahim, who had a similar fate as he went forward to defend the delivery by Axar but managed only the outside edge caught again by Rahul.
As Bangladesh were in deep trouble with 35/5 and Axar making heavy inroads in the game, these two wickets on two consecutive deliveries made it challenging for Bangladesh as he was on his way to gather his first international hat-trick in ODI cricket.
However, as fate would have had it, on the very next ball, new batsman Jakir Ali, who was surrounded with two slips and a leg slip in place, saw Axar bowled another brilliant delivery, which again caught the outside edge and travelled straight to the first slip where skipper Rohit Sharma was stationed and dropped a dolly.
Giving Bangladesh a sigh of relief as there was agony in the Indian camp while their skipper went down on his knees, regretting what had just happened.
If Axar could have made the list for players with hat-tricks in ODIs, then he would have been the fifth player from the country to do so, after four of the highly talented players on the charts.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav, who has been extremely brilliant in white-ball cricket, has bagged two hat-tricks in ODI cricket. Let's have a look at the complete list of players here.
