Imam-ul-Haq, the left-handed opening batter has been named as the official replacement of injured Fakhar Zaman in Pakistan's Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Fakhar Zaman injured his right knee on the second ball of the match, and though he fielded and batted after the blow, he never looked comfortable and has now been ruled out.
Pakistan Opt For Experience After Champions Trophy Opener Loss
The inclusion of Imam-ul-Haq means that Pakistan have decided to back experience over other options like Abdullah Shafique and Haseebullah. Imam last played for Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup and has a good ODI record with an average of 48.27 in 71 ODI innings. He has nine hundreds and 20 fifties in his career and Pakistan would hope that his addition would provide the stability and runs at the top order after a heavy loss against New Zealand.
However, Fakhar Zaman is still a big loss for Pakistan as he was one of the few batters in their arsenal who had the ability to take the game on. He displayed good form in the tri-series as well and was the hero of the game against India when the two teams met last time in Champions Trophy.
Pakistan will take on India in their next game of Champions Trophy on February 23 at the Dubai International Cricket stadium and they need to win it to keep their realistic hopes of qualifying for the semis alive. Imam-ul-Haq is likely to fit in directly into the XI with Saud Shakeel struggling in the last few games while Kamran Ghulam might take the number 3 position.
