In an interesting turn of events during the UP Warriorz fixture against Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium, the well-set Harleen Deol was forced to retire out at the back end of the first innings just when she was at the brink of a half-century. The batter looked visibly upset as she walked off; however, putting the team's interest ahead, she did not protest coach Abhishek Nayar's call.

This is another addition to the long list of players who have recently been retired out to facilitate a preferred entry point for an explosive batter to finish the innings strongly in T20 cricket. Just the night ahead of the UP game, Gujarat Giants batter Ayushi Soni had become the first-ever WPL player to be asked to go out against the Mumbai Indians.

The incident happened at the end of the 17th over, when Deol was unbeaten at 47 off 36 with the help of 7 fours, and Shafali Varma finished her over, conceding only 3 runs. With the South African all-rounder Chloe Tyron, who is known for her aggressive approach walking in to bat, Abhishek Nayar was seen calling Deol back to the hut.

After initially looking confused while talking to the dugout to confirm whether she was the one who needed to retire, the 27-year-old shook her head in disappointment and went back in.

Interestingly, Tryon, who was given the responsibility to finish the innings with her flair, followed her to the pavilion just 4 balls later when she tried to slog the left-arm spinner Shree Charani over mid-wicket. The Proteas women's star could only manage 1 off her 3-ball stay, and wickets came in clusters for the Capitals, who managed to restrict UP for 154/8 in 20 overs — only 13 runs since the Deol incident.

Having started the innings well with Meg Lanning's 54 (38) with 9 fours and a six, while she also built two consecutive partnerships with Phoebe Litchfield and Deol, adding 47 and 85 for the 2nd and 3rd wicket, respectively, the Warriors were set for a big total. However, the retire out incident derailed the first innings, and they went from 132/2 to 152/8 within 4.3 overs.

The firepower of Lizelle Lee and Shafali Varma, followed by the in-form Laura Wolvaardt, will now look to set up a successful chase and possibly improve DC's net run-rate after losses in the first two matches.
