On Wednesday, January 14, Delhi Capitals locked horns against UP Warriorz in match seven of WPL 2026 at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The Capitals, for the third time, won the toss and opted to field first.
Interestingly, the match is being played behind closed doors, and there are no fans present in the stadium to support their favourite teams. The fans were surprised to see an empty stadium and quickly rushed to social media to learn details regarding the closed-door event.
Elections result in WPL matches being played behind closed doors
For the unversed, the BCCI had informed fans in advance that entry for WPL matches will not be allowed on Janaury 14 and 15 because of a lack of security arrangements. Notably, there are Municipal Corporation Elections in Navi Mumbai on January 15, 2026, which is why the police personnel are busy with that and cannot give their time to WPL games.
“This decision has been taken in light of the Municipal Corporation Elections in Navi Mumbai on January 15, 2026,” the league said in a statement.
The apex cricket board of India has assured that, following January 15, all games will allow spectators in the ground.
“Spectators will be permitted entry into the stadium from January 16, 2026 onwards, and all subsequent matches will be played with crowds in attendance,” the statement added.
MI vs UP Warriorz match to be played behind closed doors as well
On January 15, the Mumbai Indians will lock horns against the UP Warriorz at the same ground in Navi Mumbai. Therefore, that game will also be played behind closed doors. For the unversed, WPL started on January 9, and since then, all the games have been played at the same venue in Maharashtra.
However, the caravan will shift to Vadodara from January 19 when Gujarat Giants lock horns against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Kotambi.
Daler Mehendi to light up WPL 2026 mid-innings on January 16
In a major announcement from the Women’s Premier League, iconic Indian singer, songwriter, and record producer Daler Mehndi will perform live during the mid-innings entertainment slot on January 16.
Notably, Mehndi will take the stage at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women will face Gujarat Giants Women on the same day. Notably, the WPL had also held an opening ceremony where Jacqueline fernandez, Honey Singh graced the event in Navi Mumbai.
It has been an interesting first week in the WPL, where Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians have emerged as the best sides with two wins in three matches. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz are struggling with two defeats in two matches.
