In a recent news, a concussion substitution controversy erupted during the Ranji Trophy semifinal between Kerala and Gujarat on February 20. The icicent erupted after Gujarat replaced injured spinner Ravi Bishnoi with seamer Hemang Patel on Thursday. It was clearly seen that Kerala players, particularly Jalaj Saxena was having animated discussions with the umpires over the rule.

Ravi Bishnoi Walks Off The Field After Injury

The incident occurred when Ravi Bishnoi suffered a concussion while attempting to stop a ball at point. As he attempted to dive, the ball deflected off his hand and struck his face, forcing him off the field for medical attention. Bishnoi, who had dismissed Kerala opener Rohan Kunnummal earlier, did not return to play.

Gujarat opted to bring in medium-pacer Hemang Patel as his replacement. The decision raised concerns over interpreting the ‘like-for-like’ substitution rule, which mandates that a concussion sub should be a player with a similar skill set to the injured cricketer. Despite the objections, Gujarat’s decision was upheld by the match officials, citing a lack of realistic alternatives.

It is also important to mention that when the pacer came into the walk, he made 27 runs off 41 balls. His knock helped Gujarat to stay in contention for a first-innings lead.

It is important to note that a similar controversial incident was seen in the recent T20I series between India and England when pacer Harshit Rana was brought in as a substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube.

Kerala Posts Strong Total As Gujarat Fights Back

Kerala had earlier posted a formidable first-innings score 457,  with significant contribution by wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen, who made unbeaten 177 from 341 balls. Gujarat, however, made a strong reply, with Priyank Panchal smashing 148 and forming a 131-run opening stand with Aarya Desai.
