In the ongoing Ranji Trophy semi-finals between Mumbai and Vidharbha at the VCA stadium, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side took to the field wearing black arm bands on day 3.

Notably, much to the fans' curiosity and for unversed, the Mumbai players donned the black armbands in honour of former captain and selector Milind Rege, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76 following a heart attack.

Who Was Milind Rege?

Rege made a name for himself playing for Bombay as he took 126 wickets with his off breaks in 52 first-class matches between 1966-67 and 1977-78 and also scored 1532 runs at an average of 23.56 in those games.

After his playing career, Rege was associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in various capacities, including selector and chief of selector in separate stints. He was one of the Mumbai selectors when a young Sachin Tendulkar was added to the Ranji Trophy squad in 1988.

However, despite being a big name in Mumbai cricket, Rege failed to play for India. Following his demise, several prominent figures honoured his legacy on social media platforms, particularly Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri, who penned an emotional note on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the special gesture by Mumbai Cricket Association was praised by the fans and cricket pundits. Not just Mumbai, but Vidarbbha too paid their respect to Rege and stood in silence for couple of minutes before the start of day's play.

Talking about the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025 semi-finals between Mumbai and Vidarbha, then the defending champions are in trouble, as Vidarbha, batting first, put 383 runs on the board. In reply, Mumbai tumbled for just 270 runs, giving Vidarbha a 113-run lead.
