Gujarat Giants stunned table-toppers Delhi Capitals in match number 17 of the WPL 2025 season at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The outcome helped them jump to number two on the points table.

Here’s the timeline of how Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Giants panned out in Lucknow:

Shafali Verma, Lanning Crank It Up A Notch In Fiery Opening Stand

Batting first, Delhi Capitals raced past the 50-run mark at the end of the opening powerplay itself without losing a wicket. Captain Meg Lanning and her firebrand opening partner Shafali Verma hauled 83 runs for the first wicket from just nine overs, where the latter chipped in with a swift 27-ball 40 with three boundaries and three huge sixes.

Gujarat Giants fast bowler Meghna Singh halted Verma’s juggernaut with an off-pace delivery around the halfway stage of the innings. The Giants made the most of its newfound momentum, with Deandra Dottin and Meghna accounting for the cheap dismissals of Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues respectively as the Capitals slipped to 119-3 in 14.2 overs.

Meg Lanning Ensures Strong Finish For Delhi Capitals

Meghna Singh picked up her third wicket of the innings in the form of Delhi Capitals’ middle-order star Annabel Sutherland at 141-4 to claim figures of 3-35. Meg Lanning, however, marched on to crack a scintillating 92 from 57 balls with 15 boundaries and one huge six to catapult the Capitals to a competitive 177-5 from 20 overs. In pursuit of quick runs at the death, Lanning missed her century courtesy of a clean-up job from Deandra Dottin (2-37).

Sarah Bryce at number seven also contributed to Capitals’ high-scoring cause with a huge six off the last delivery of the innings.

Beth Mooney Leads Giants’ Rescue With Harleen Deol

Chasing 178 for a win, Gujarat Giants lost opening batter Dayalan Hemalatha for a sluggish single from seven balls to Delhi Capitals fast bowler Shikha Pandey in just the second over of the innings. Hemalatha’s opening partner Beth Mooney led Gujarat Giants’ fiery retort with a blistering 44-run knock off 35 balls.

The Australia-based wicketkeeper-batter shared 85 runs for the second wicket with number three Harleen Deol to take the Giants closer to the 100-run mark before falling to Minnu Mani.

Harleen Deol Completes Clinical Chase After Dottin Fireworks

Gujarat Giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner (22 off 13) and senior all-rounder Deandra Dottin (24 off 10) compounded fiery cameos to stay afloat with the asking rate, while unbeaten Harleen Deol went on to anchor the run-chase with an elegant 70* off 49 balls.

Deol launched nine boundaries and one huge six, and remained defiant in her approach despite Jess Jonassen’s late fightback for the Delhi Capitals with two big wickets off successive deliveries. The Giants ended up overhauling their 178-run target with five wickets and three balls to spare to register its fourth win of the WPL 2025 season, all while snapping Capitals’ winning streak in the process.
