Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie has jumped to Pakistan’s defense against outspoken Indian commentator and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar. It is worth noting that Gavaskar defamed the Pakistan cricket team last month after Team India secured an easy six-wicket victory over them in the Group A match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The cricketer-turned-commentator had said that for the current Pakistani team, even defeating a B or a C side from India will be a difficult task.

Jason Gillespie says Gavaskar’s comments ‘nonsense’

Jason Gillespie, who served as Pakistan head coach before stepping down from the role last year, described Sunil Gavaskar’s comments as ‘nonsense’ regarding Pakistan’s inability of defeating India B or India C sides. The former Australian fast bowler and 2003 World Cup winner stated that with a combination of right players, coupled with the existence of current talent in the country, the Pakistani team is capable of defeating any side in the world.

In a minute-long tirade against Sunil Gavaskar, Jason Gillespie also urged the Pakistani selection committee to pick the right playing combination and to be patient with its emerging stars. The ex-Australian cricketer added that there is too much “impatience” in Pakistan’s current cricketing setup, which has led to the team’s dramatic downfall off late.

The Pakistan cricket team, under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, failed to win its ODI tri-series at home against New Zealand and South Africa in February. Moreover, the ‘Men in Green’ also spent its entire 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign without a single win as they fell to humiliating defeats against New Zealand and India before enduring a washout against Bangladesh.

At the moment, the Pakistan team is prepping itself to tour New Zealand for a series of five T20Is and three ODI matches.
