DC lose to GG in dramatic WPL 2026 finish [Source: @imArshit/X.com]
Gujarat Giants Women pulled off one of the most dramatic wins of the WPL 2026, edging past Delhi Capitals Women by just four runs at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
In a match that swung wildly in the final overs, Delhi looked set for victory after a stunning late assault, but Sophie Devine produced a brilliant last over to turn the game on its head.
The Giants’ 209 was eventually enough, as Delhi finished on 205/5, leaving the Capitals stunned after letting a winning position slip.
Devine and Gardner power Gujarat Giants to 209
Gujarat Giants were put in to bat and lost Beth Mooney early, but that only set the stage for a brutal counter-attack. Sophie Devine was in devastating form, smashing 95 off just 42 balls with seven fours and eight sixes.
She took on the Delhi bowlers from the start, making full use of the short boundaries and true pitch, but was unfortunate not to have reached a well-deserved century.
Ashleigh Gardner supported her well, scoring 49 off 26 balls, and the pair added quick runs to push the Giants well beyond 100 inside 11 overs.
Even as wickets fell at the other end, Devine kept finding the boundary, lifting the tempo every over.
Delhi tried to fight back through Nandani Sharma, who took a magical hat-trick and finished with excellent figures of 5/33, but the damage had already been done.
Late cameos from Anushka Sharma and Kashvee Gautam pushed the total past 200. The Giants eventually ended on 209 all out in the final over, a big score but not an unmanageable one on a batting-friendly surface.
Laura Wolvaardt’s late surge kept Delhi Capitals in the chase
Delhi Capitals began their chase positively, with Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee adding quick runs in the powerplay. After Verma fell, Laura Wolvaardt joined Lee, and the two built a strong partnership.
Lee played a powerful innings, scoring 86 off 54 balls, while Wolvaardt was elegant and aggressive in her 77 off 38 deliveries.
When Lee departed in the 15th over, Delhi still needed 79 from 34 balls. With Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues at the crease, the game seemed firmly in their control.
What followed was a breathtaking assault. The 18th and 19th overs went for 41 runs combined as Wolvaardt and Jemimah tore into the Giants’ bowling.
Boundaries and sixes flowed, and with seven needed from the final over, Delhi were clear favourites.
Delhi choke as Sophie Devine defends 7 runs
That is when Sophie Devine changed the game. She took the ball for the 20th over and delivered under immense pressure.
First, she removed Jemimah Rodrigues, caught behind. Then, with nerves rising, she dismissed Wolvaardt, who picked out deep mid-wicket, trying to finish the match in style.
Two big wickets in three balls suddenly tilted the game. Marizanne Kapp and Sneh Rana were left with the task, but Devine kept her calm.
She conceded just two runs in the over and took two wickets, sealing a remarkable four-run win for the Giants.
Delhi were left shell-shocked. From needing just seven off the last over with set batters at the crease, they managed only two runs and lost two key wickets.
This was a typical case of a late choke and the Gujarat Giants celebrated a historic victory that looked highly improbable a few minutes earlier.
With that, GG-W continued their unbeaten run and climbed to the top of the points table. DC-W, meanwhile, are still searching for their maiden victory. With zero points, they dropped to the bottom of the table.
