Star India opener Ruturaj Gaikwad surprised everyone by turning into a bowler during the Buchi Babu Trophy and even picked up a wicket. The CSK captain rolled his arm over at a crucial stage and made an immediate impact.

Maharashtra, captained by Ankeet Bawne, was trying hard to dismiss the last Chhattisgarh pair of Shashank Tiwari and Sourabh Majumdar, who were frustrating them by holding on for four overs.

With regular bowlers failing to break the stand, Bawne decided to hand the ball to Gaikwad for the last over of the day.

The move worked like magic. Although Ruturaj Gaikwad was hit for a six on his second delivery, he bounced back brilliantly. On the very next ball, he bowled a flighted delivery.

Majumdar gave in to the temptation and went for a big hit down the ground. However, the pace deceived him, and with ill-timing, he drove the ball straight back to Gaikwad, who latched a simple catch to pick a surprise wicket.

The dismissal sent the Maharashtra players into celebrations and left fans stunned, as they rarely get to see Gaikwad in a bowling role.

The day was also memorable for Prithvi Shaw, who played his first professional match for Maharashtra after moving from Mumbai. Shaw grabbed 3 important catches and later dominated with the bat, staying unbeaten on 65 as Maharashtra chased Chhattisgarh’s 252.

At stumps, Maharashtra were at 88/4, with Shaw looking solid alongside Siddharth Mhatre.

Gaikwad Fails With The Bat

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad endured a forgettable outing with the bat, scoring just one run in the Buchi Babu Trophy game against Chhattisgarh. Playing his first competitive match since an elbow injury in IPL 2025, the Maharashtra skipper was bowled by Varun Singh Bhuie after facing only 4 balls.

With Prithvi Shaw shining at the other end, Ruturaj’s failure stood out. He now aims to bounce back in upcoming fixtures, including the Duleep Trophy, where he will represent the West Zone.
