In a significant development, veteran English all-rounder Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the fifth Test against India at Kennington Oval. The experienced cricketer sustained a nasty shoulder injury on the opening day, sidelining him from the remainder of the Test match.

Injury Sidelines Woakes From Oval Test

The incident occurred during the third session on day 1 of the Oval Test. While attempting to prevent the ball from breaching the boundary ropes, Chris Woakes injured himself by landing on his left elbow.

The impact of the landing was so strong that it badly hurt his left shoulder, with the English team physio taking him out of the ground.

As revealed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Woakes won't take further part in the fifth Test and will be assessed for his injury at the end of the series.

Woakes had a poor series with the ball against India, scalping 11 wickets across nine innings at a mediocre strike rate of 98. He was equally disappointing with the bat as well, scoring 64 runs in six innings at a horrendous average of 10.67.

Talking about the fifth Test at the Oval, Woakes delivered 14 overs with modest success, getting the prized scalp of India's in-form batter KL Rahul while conceding 46 runs at an economy of 3.29.

Woakes has been an integral member of the English Test setup over the years. In 61 Tests, the veteran cricketer has bagged 191 wickets while scoring 2034 runs with the bat as well. However, given that he is 36 years old, this devastating shoulder injury could put an end to his impactful Test career.
