Maharashtra cricketer Ankit Bawne has been handed a one-match ban for showing dissent in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. The decision was communicated to the Maharashtra team prior to their Elite Group A match against Baroda from January 23 onwards at the Golf Club Ground in Nasik.

Bawne refused to leave the field during Maharashtra’s fourth match of the tournament, that against Services back in November 2024 at Pune’s MCA Stadium.

Ankit Bawne punished for dissent

Ankit Bawne, who played for the Delhi Capitals franchise back during the 2017 edition of the IPL, received a one-match suspension in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy for showing dissent to the umpires earlier in the tournament.

Back in November during a four-day thriller between Maharashtra and Services in Pune, captain Bawne crafted 73 runs from 104 balls to top-score for his side in the first innings. However, the well-set batter refused to walk off the field after getting caught out by Shubham Rohilla off Amit Shukla in the 50th over of the Maharashtra innings. Bawne’s dismissal ended up giving Services a huge 108-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.

The 32-year-old refused to walk back to the pavilion, but could not opt to review the decision either as there was no infrastructure for the DRS in place, considering the match was not televised but only live streamed. His refusal to accept the decision halted play for about 15 minutes, before the game could resume at the intervention of match referee Amit Sharma.

Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni and even regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad backed Ankit Bawne and lashed out at the poor umpiring standards in Indian domestic cricket.

It is worth noting that captain Bawne scored another 94* in the decisive innings of the match, but his run-chase masterclass failed to take Maharashtra past the finish line as Services secured a thrilling 35-run victory.

With Ankit Bawne not taking field against Baroda on January 23, regular Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad assumed his leadership responsibilities once again after missing out his team’s last few Ranji Trophy 2024-25 fixtures.
