Day 2 of the first Test between India and England belonged to the hosts, as the Ben Stokes-led side bowled out the visitors for 471 runs. Notably, the Shubman Gill-led team had dominated the Three Lions on Day 1, ending the day at 359/3.
Stokes’ Celebration Goes Viral
Rishabh Pant started Day 2 positively and reached his seventh Test hundred. However, overcast conditions proved tricky as India lost seven wickets for just 31 runs. Jos Tongue and Ben Stokes were the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets each.
Meanwhile, Stokes stole the limelight after pulling off a bizarre celebration following Tongue’s last wicket of India’s innings. On the final ball of the 113th over, Tongue rattled Prasidh Krishna’s stumps, after which the camera panned to the England skipper, who was captured making unusual gestures. Stuart Broad Explains Viral Celebration
As soon as the celebration went viral, former England skipper Stuart Broad took to Twitter to explain it. The England legend remarked that the celebration is called ‘Rabbit Pie’, which means cleaning up the tailenders and taking wickets.
“Eating rabbit pie. Getting the tail-enders out. Knocking over the lower order,” tweeted Stuart Broad.
Why Did Ben Stokes Pull This Celebration?
The celebration was all in good fun and a light-hearted moment, as Stokes was teasing Tongue for picking up the easy wickets. Notably, Ben was inching closer to a five-wicket haul after removing the crucial wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, and Karun Nair.
Tongue quickly cleaned up the lower order, taking the scalps of Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna. This prevented Stokes from securing a five-wicket haul.
On the other hand, Ben was also impressed by his bowlers for cleaning up the tail-enders quickly, as they can be really frustrating, and those extra runs have often hurt teams later in the match.
