Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has made a big statement about the retirement of two of India’s biggest cricket stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While fans were worried about how India would perform without them in the ongoing Test series against England, Ganguly said he was not concerned at all.
Ahead of India’s 5-game Test tour to England, two seniors, Rohit and Kohli, abruptly announced their retirement from the Test format. BCCI then handed over captaincy to 25-year-old Shubman Gill, as Indian Test cricket embarked on a new era.
Sourav Ganguly Trusts Youngsters To Fill Kohli-Rohit Void
Despite big gaps left by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes youngsters can take the Test team forward. Talking to PTI and quoted by Republic World, he explained that he wasn’t concerned about the seniors stepping away, as the new generation looked ready to take over.
"I was not concerned at all (after the retirements of Virat and Rohit). Virat is a class player, finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn’t surprised," Ganguly said.
Ganguly, who played a huge role in shaping modern Indian cricket, believes the country has a strong system in place to handle such transitions. He pointed to the strength of domestic cricket, talent development, and the rise of quality players through leagues like the IPL.
"There’s just too much quality in Indian cricket because of the system, the strength of domestic cricket, leagues, and the investment associations make in player development," he added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill Takes Charge
Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill proved that they can replace Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s Test batting lineup. In the first innings of the Headingley Test against England, Jaiswal scored a ton (101) as an opener.
Not only that, Gill, batting at no. 4, scored 147 to script history. He slammed a hundred on his debut Test as captain, a feat previously achieved by Virat Kohli in 2014. These two youngsters emulated Rohit and Kohli perfectly to emerge as the new-gen stars of Indian Test cricket.
