The saga around Shubman Gill’s black socks took a new turn as the India captain switched to white socks on Day 2 to avoid disciplinary action from the ICC. Fans spotted the change of color when Gill resumed batting alongside his deputy, Rishabh Pant.

Notably, on Day 1 of the first Test between India and England, the 25-year-old made headlines for scoring a century on his captaincy debut. However, the right-handed batter also went viral on social media for the wrong reasons after fans noticed him wearing black socks.

Why Wearing Black Socks Became Controversial?

It is worth noting that, according to ICC rules, players are required to follow a specific dress code. Article 19.45 states that only white, cream, or light grey socks are permitted. As a result, Gill is likely to face a sanction from the International Cricket Council (ICC), possibly a 20% fine.

However, if Gill accepts his mistake and can convince the match referee that it was unintentional, he may escape the fine.

So far, there has been no official announcement from the ICC regarding the matter, nor has the England team commented on it. It is likely that a decision will be made after the end of the first Test.

Shubman Gill Shines on His Test Captaincy Debut

Despite the socks controversy, the 25-year-old silenced his critics with a sensational innings. Shubman had faced significant criticism for his underwhelming performances in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries, including England.

However, the right-handed batter, who came in at No. 4 with India at 91/2, smashed 147 runs off 227 balls, including 19 fours and a solitary six.

At the time of writing, India had scored 471 runs in their first innings, and the match has been delayed due to rain.
