Sydney Sixers snapped its short-term losing streak by levelling Perth Scorchers in a high-scoring BBL 2024-25 thriller at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, January 11. Steve Smith hogged the limelight with the bat with a scintillating century before Sean Abbott’s wicket-laden four-over spell made the difference between the two sides.

Perth Scorchers fast bowler Jason Behrendorff had Sixers opener Josh Phillipe caught out by Ashton Agar for just nine in the final over of the powerplay. Thereafter, Kurtis Patterson at number three failed to lead Sixers to recovery as the 31-year-old found Sam Fanning near the boundary ropes off Cooper Connolly, forcing the hosts to slip to 49-2 in 7.3 overs.

Steve Smith, along with captain Moises Henriques, led Sydney Sixers’ counterattacking response by sharing 113 runs for the third wicket from just 51 balls. Henriques blasted 46 of those runs from 28 deliveries with six boundaries and two sixes until the charismatic all-rounder was trapped in front by Ashton Agar at 162-3 in 17 overs.

Smith raged on to mount his third BBL hundred, reaching the landmark figure from just 58 balls before finishing at 121* off 64 deliveries with seven burgeoning sixes and 10 additional boundaries.

Ben Dwarshuis at number five blasted a seven-ball 23* in the slog overs during his 58-run stand with the unbeaten centurion as the Sydney Sixers raced to 220-3 by the completion of their innings.

In pursuit of 221, Perth Scorchers lost opener Finn Allen and number three Aaron Hardie off successive deliveries to Sydney Sixers paceman Sean Abbott in the fourth over of the run-chase.

Tottering at 36-2, Sam Fanning and in-form Cooper Connolly lifted the Scorchers to 91 from nine overs as the two belligerent cricketers formed a quick 55-run stand for the third wicket. While Fanning unfurled two sixes and two boundaries in his 29-ball 41, Connolly clattered 33 off 23 until both well-set batters were done-in by Hayden Kerr and Abbott in quick succession.

Abbott picked up his fourth wicket of the evening in the form of Ashton Agar for a duck to claim figures of 4-43 in a high-scoring innings. Ben Dwarshuis accounted for Nick Hobson’s downfall as the Scorchers crashed from 91-2 to 128-6 by the end of the 14th over.

Battered and bruised at 128-6 in a chase of 221, Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner smeared 66 unbeaten runs from just 32 balls with six boundaries and two sixes. Turner staged Scorchers’ remarkable recovery through a whirlwind 76-run stand with Matthew Spoors (28 off 17) to take his team past the 200-run mark.

Entertaining possibility of an unlikely heist, the Scorchers had all its ambitions compressed courtesy of a tight final over from Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques.

The visitors eventually concluded their pursuit at 206-7 from 20 overs to fall 14 runs short of the hosts and newly-crowned BBL 2024-25 table toppers Sydney Sixers.
