Melbourne Renegades pulled off a remarkable heist over hosts Perth Scorchers at the Perth Stadium in match number 26 of the BBL 2024-25 season. The outcome marked Renegades’ first win after three failed attempts, and the third win of the competition overall to retain its sixth spot on the eight-team points table.

Melbourne Renegades captain Will Sutherland delivered the opening strike with the wicket of Perth Scorchers opener Finn Allen for 12-ball 19 in the third over. The speedster further trapped Mitchell Marsh in front of stumps for a first-ball duck off the very next delivery before new ball operator Tom Rogers and senior speedster Kane Richardson got the key wickets of in-form Cooper Connolly and Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner respectively.

Shortly after Scorchers reached 63-4 at the halfway stage of the innings, Adam Zampa deceived Nick Hobson with a wrong-un while opener Aaron Hardie had his well-set 34-ball 34-run stay halted by Rogers (2-39). Around the first 14 overs of the match, the Scorchers lost each of its top six batters for just 86 on the board.

Batting at number seven, Ashton Agar lifted Perth Scorchers’ dwindling scoring rate in the slog overs with a sequence of four extraordinary sixes.

After losing Jhye Richardson and Matthew Kelly off successive deliveries to Adam Zampa at 114-8 in 17 overs, Agar batted out the remaining three overs of the innings with unbeaten number 10 Jason Behrendorff (5*) to surge the Scorchers total to 147-8.

The spin bowling all-rounder ended up top-scoring in the innings with a swift 30-ball 51* to notch up his second T20 and BBL half-century.

Defending 148 runs for a win, Perth Scorchers fast bowlers Jason Behrendorff and Jhye Richardson got the new ball swinging at the top. While Behrendorff removed Renegades opener Tim Seifert and number three Jake Fraser-McGurk for ducks in the first over, Richardson got the better of Jacob Bethell with a searing short pitched delivery.

Lance Morris also got into the act with an early wicket of Laurie Evans as the Renegades crashed to 10-4 in 4.3 overs. Around the halfway stage of the innings, the speedster induced a nick of well-set opener Marcus Harris for 21 as the visitor’s troubles worsened further at 44-5.

Tottering at 10-4, soon to be 44-5 in a chase of 148, captain Will Sutherland sparked life back into the Melbourne Renegades pursuit with a calculated ball-striking and lots of running. Forming forces with fellow all-rounder Tom Rogers, the two cricketers shared 92 runs for the sixth wicket to take the Renegades to the brink of an unlikely victory in the slog overs.

Sutherland unfurled the innings of the match with a cunning 45-ball 70 glittered with five boundaries and three sixes before he was holed out by Jason Behrendorff off Jhye Richardson at 136-6.

Rogers finished off the tight chase with two balls to spare in the final over by cracking an unbeaten 49 from just 31 balls.
