Australian star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh's much-anticipated return to the Big Bash League (BBL) turned into a nightmare as he was dismissed for a golden duck. After a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Marsh returned to play for Perth Scorchers, hoping to make a strong comeback. However, things didn’t go as planned during their match against Melbourne Renegades at Perth Stadium on January 7.
Marsh walked in to bat after Finn Allen had contributed 19 runs to the Scorchers' total. Facing Renegades' pacer Will Sutherland, Marsh was under pressure to steady the innings. However, Sutherland, who had already dismissed Allen, was in fiery form.
On the fifth ball of the over, Sutherland bowled a full delivery that swung back into Marsh. The ball nipped off the seam, catching Marsh completely off-guard. His footwork was off, and he was trapped plumb in front of the stumps. The umpire immediately raised his finger, leaving no room for doubt. Marsh was out on the very first ball he faced, sending a wave of disappointment through the Perth crowd.
Scorchers Struggle Early On Vs Renegades
Melbourne Renegades opted to bowl first, and their decision paid off quickly. Sutherland got the ball rolling by removing Finn Allen, while Tom Rogers added to the Scorchers' woes by dismissing Cooper Connolly for a duck. Captain Ashton Turner also fell cheaply, managing just 8 runs before being sent back to the pavilion.
At the time of writing, Perth Scorchers are struggling at 47-4 after seven overs.
