Jacob Bethell, a rising star in English cricket, has been in terrific form lately. However, his promising run came to an abrupt end during the Melbourne Renegades' match against the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League 2024-25. The game, played at Perth Stadium, saw Bethell dismissed for just 2 runs by Jhye Richardson, marking a significant blow to the Renegades' chances.
The Renegades were chasing a target of 148 set by the Scorchers. Right from the start, things went downhill for them. The team lost two quick wickets, leaving them at 0-2. With expectations high, Bethell stepped in, hoping to steady the ship. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make an impact.
In the fourth over of the innings, Jhye Richardson delivered a fierce 146 kmph short ball aimed at the stumps. Bethell tried to pull the ball, but the pace caught him off guard. He mistimed the shot, sending the ball high towards mid-on. Andrew Tye ran back from the circle, tracked the ball over his shoulder, and took a brilliant catch, sending Bethell back to the pavilion.
Early Setbacks for the Renegades
Before Bethell’s dismissal, the Renegades had already suffered a terrible start. Tim Seifert was sent packing without scoring, falling victim to a golden duck. Jake Fraser-McGurk followed, also dismissed for a golden duck. Jason Behrendorff caused significant damage by taking two early wickets, leaving the Renegades struggling. Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson chipped in with one wicket each to deepen the crisis.
At the time of writing, the Melbourne Renegades are struggling at 41-4 in 9.1 overs.
