Bangladesh cricket has entered a new phase of leadership as the BCB announced fresh vice-captain appointments across all formats. This comes ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Apart from the T20 event, several key World Test Championship fixtures are also lined up.

Hence, the board believes strengthening the leadership group will bring more stability and direction to the national team.

Bangladesh appoint new vice-captains

In Test cricket, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed the new vice-captain. He will work closely with Najmul Shanto, who continues as the Test captain.

Shanto’s position as skipper has been confirmed at least until the end of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Bangladesh’s most recent Test outing was a strong one, as they defeated Ireland by an innings and 47 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The second Test begins on November 19 in Dhaka, and the new leadership structure will be closely observed.

Interestingly, in ODI cricket, the roles are reversed. Here, Shanto will serve as vice-captain, while Miraz continues as the ODI captain.  Mehidy Miraz was appointed ODI skipper in June this year for a one-year term.

Saif Hassan to be deputy leader in T20Is

In T20Is, Bangladesh have chosen to reward promising young opener Saif Hassan with the vice-captaincy.

His performances in the shortest format have been impressive, especially considering he has scored four 50-plus knocks in just 18 matches.

His growth and consistency have not gone unnoticed, and now he will be the deputy to Litton Das, who was named T20I captain in May this year.

Das will lead the Tigers into the 2026 T20 World Cup, making this new partnership crucial for the team’s preparations.

Before turning their focus fully toward the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh will face Ireland in a three-match T20I series starting November 27, right after the conclusion of their current Test series.
